Three little Kashmiri siblings must earn Rs. 700 in two days to repair their father’s sledge, their family’s sole source of income, which they accidentally broke while playing.
A Story from Kashmir That Speaks to the World
Set in a village near Gulmarg, Kashmir, The Sledge follows Ali, a father who earns his living giving sledge rides to tourists. One day, while he is away, his children accidentally break his beloved sledge—the very tool that helps the family survive.
As the children struggle to repair it before his return, the film becomes a tender tale about honesty, responsibility, and resilience.
Shot in the snowy beauty of Kashmir, the film quietly unfolds into a deeply emotional portrait of family and childhood—those small, human moments that resonate far beyond borders.
But beyond the story on screen lies another story—how the film itself was made.
With no funding and no extra crew, we made this film with just four people—alongside the children (my own kids and niece) who acted in it. They didn’t just perform. They helped carry gear, prepare locations, and run errands. They were the heartbeat of the production.
My friend Manas Bhattacharyya, who was also the cinematographer of my diploma film at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, came all the way from Kolkata to shoot the film—without charging a single rupee. And Ajit Bhasin, currently studying sound at the same institute, handled the location sound recording—again, entirely voluntarily.
This is a film made with bare hands. And full hearts.
