Based on true incidents..
On a transformative journey from Trinidad to North India, Tulasi Maraj, a 30 year-old woman, embarks on a quest to uncover her ancestral roots, only to discover a deeper connection with her true self along the way.
Context: The history of India and Trinidad and Tobago in 1845, during British rule when the first ship, the Atlas, arrived at Trinidad and Tobago November 2, 1834 carrying 36 indentured labourers from India. The indentured labourers were contracted to work on the sugar estates for three to five years. They were not free during their contract period and could not demand higher wages or leave the estate without permission. Over the time after the independence of both countries, these Indian origin indentured labourers made a visible difference to the physical and cultural landscape of Trinidad and Tobago . The descendants of these indentured labourers are now an integral part of the economic, political, and social fabric of Trinidad and Tobago . Indian theater is also popular throughout Trinidad and Tobago . Today, 66-70% of Trinidad and Tobago population is of pure Indian descent—the highest among Caribbean island nations. Our story, ‘The Lost Roots’ reunites Tulasi an Indo-Trinidad and Tobago woman to her ancestral roots and shows her journey of uncovering a deeper connection to her identity.
